Everyone has their own reason for volunteering.  Often individuals come to Hospice Muskoka because of their interest in hospice and palliative care, personal experience following the death of a loved one, awareness of the benefits of Advanced Care Planning or simply a desire to help others.  Whatever your reason, we are honoured to have you. Volunteers in the hospice field are sensitive to the special needs of dying clients and their families and choose to support them through understanding the unique path each person takes to deal with their own grief.

Volunteers are an integral part of our interdisciplinary team that serves our clients and families.  Currently over 65 volunteers provide 4000-5000 hours per year of direct service and over 25 provide 1000+ hours per year in administrative and fundraising support.  Our goal is to build a team of 150 volunteers working out of 3 locations; Port Carling, Bracebridge and Gravenhurst to serve the needs of our vast geography.

Whether you choose direct service, provide administrative or fundraising support, tend to our building maintenance or gardens; your time is greatly appreciated and recognized.

All volunteers are required to undergo various screening protocols including a Criminal Reference Screening through the OPP to enable them to work with vulnerable persons as well as completing a full orientation on the history, principles, values, policies and procedures of Hospice Muskoka.  After completing a general orientation as a group, volunteers complete specialized training based on their areas of interest. Current choices are listed above under "Volunteer Opportunities" and will be described in detail during the general orientation.

Complete the Volunteer Application Form, which will be sent to our Volunteer Coordinator, Julie Charters (jcharters@hospicemuskoka.com).

Note: you will be asked to include the following with your application form:

  • Copy of your driver’s license

  • Copy of your COVID-19 vaccine passport showing proof of 3 doses received

  • Current Police Check

  • Identify Specific areas of interest

Applications will be reviewed and a phone or in-person interview will be arranged.

Once accepted, volunteers are required to attend an orientation to review Hospice Muskoka’s volunteer program policies, volunteer agreement, staff and patient confidentiality policies, privacy legislation, health and safety policies, and attend duty-specific training where appropriate.

Monthly volunteer team meetings and educational opportunities will be available and all volunteers are encouraged to attend.
