Volunteer with us or
How to Become a Volunteer

Thank you for your interest in our volunteer program. As a non-profit agency, Hospice Muskoka relies on its volunteers to play a key role in all our services and programs; from the volunteer board of directors who govern Hospice Muskoka to volunteers that assist with fundraising and community events.

Direct Service Volunteers spend time in the home of someone who is in the end stages of life and offer emotional, practical and spiritual support to our clients. Tasks can vary from reading to the client, writing letters or talking, to assisting with food preparation, light household duties or personal care, as well as:

~ companionship ~ reading aloud ~ simple comfort measures ~ assistance with daily activities ~ writing letters ~  relief for caregivers ~ telephone support ~ bedside vigil while family members rest ~ bereavement follow-up ~ working cooperatively with home health care providers, physicians and clergy to provide continuity of care ~

Compassionate and sensitive to persons and families facing a life threatening illness.

Skilled in working with people; friendly, open, flexible, able to meet others on their own terms, a good listener.

 Non-judgmental

Able to understand and adapt to different cultural, racial, sexual, spiritual, and intellectual needs of a client and family members

Aware of other people's needs and able to meet those needs as a result of previous life experiences and on-going training.

Able to let their person, not their skills, be the healing agent.

Self-confident, able to function independently, and able to problem solve with the assistance of other team members when necessary.

Able to recognize fears and limitations.

Able to recognize that they will not always be needed by the client and/or family.

Due to the sensitive nature of our work, all our volunteers undergo thorough screening which includes an interview, reference checks, a police records checks, 30 hours of training and ongoing supervision and feedback.

Our comprehensive training program is offered in the spring and fall of each year.  To apply for any of our volunteer opportunities, please contact us at Hospice Muskoka at 646-1697 or via email to request an application form.

Volunteering at Hospice Muskoka can be a demanding and challenging opportunity yet a very rewarding and fulfilling one. Thank you for your interest.
