About Us

"Hospice Muskoka helps people like you and me"

What is Hospice?
In the middle ages, a hospice was a resting place for travelers on a difficult journey. The modern hospice movement began in London, England in 1967 when Dr. Cicely Saunders founded St. Christopher's Hospice. Today, a hospice can be a special place where people with life-threatening illnesses are cared for or, like Hospice Muskoka, it is a service that reaches out to people wherever they might live.

You may also see the word palliative care used instead of hospice. Both words describe an approach  to care that considers the whole person; their physical, emotional, and spiritual needs.

What is Hospice Muskoka?
Hospice Muskoka is a community based volunteer organization that serves the emotional and social needs of individuals of all ages who are facing a life-threatening illness. Hospice Muskoka embodies the spirit of 'living in comfort and dignity and hope'
We are people at your side at a special time. We are about quality of life.

Hospice Muskoka was incorporated in 1995 as a not-for-profit charity and has been serving the residents of South Muskoka ever since. Specially trained visiting volunteers provide non-medical, supportive care with a focus on the emotional and social needs of the client base at home, in hospital, in seniors’ residences and nursing homes in the Towns of Bracebridge, Gravenhurst and in the Township of Muskoka Lakes.

Who can contact Hospice?
Anyone may call for information or assistance. An assessment is done to learn what your needs are and how we can help. Hospice will arrange a volunteer visitor, keeping in mind the needs and preferences of the person referred. There is no fee for this service.

When do you contact Hospice?
Our support is available from time of the initial diagnosis of the illness.

How can you help Hospice?
You can help by becoming a trained volunteer visitor, serving on the board or various committees, helping with a variety of public awareness and fundraising activities, telephone and administrative support, taking out a membership, or making a donation. Or become a member. Members help where we are going in the future. See our members page.
